Call for Student Mentorship Program participants!

Dear Colleagues,

The CAPAL National Student Committee is thrilled to be accepting applications for the Student Mentorship Program. This session will run for the duration of the Winter 2024 semester (January – April 2024). Applications to join the first group of mentors and mentees will close on December 20, 2023.

Interested mentors and mentees can apply through the following form: Call for Applications: Student Mentorship Program

Mentee Eligibility: Students and recent graduates who are/were enrolled in an MLIS or related program and are current members of CAPAL are invited to apply as mentees. Recent graduates from a library technician program are encouraged to reach out to the CAPAL Student Committee to discuss the opportunity further.

Mentor Eligibility: Academic librarians at all stages in their career who are current members of CAPAL are invited to serve as mentors in support of a mentee’s developing career. Retired members are also welcome to participate as mentors. We welcome mentors from all fields of academic librarianship to provide mentorship and a diversity of perspective and experience, especially in specialities often neglected by library & information science programs.

Every effort will be made to match mentees with mentors according to their areas of interest/expertise in academic librarianship, although final matches will depend upon a suitable number of applicants.

As this mentorship program is intended to focus on career building, it is expected that mentees will drive the mentorship partnership, with the opportunity to discuss and receive feedback from mentors on topics such as:

  • General career goals and career-building guidance
  • CV/resume review
  • Interview preparation
  • Discussions of hiring, tenure, and promotion processes
  • “Day in the life” style discussions about the profession
  • Discussions of specific areas of interest in academic librarianship

Expanding beyond these topics to discuss other topics of mutual interest and experience is also encouraged but not required. Please note that mentors are not responsible for finding mentees a job or providing personal counsel.

Mentees and mentors are expected to:

– Commit to the full term of the session (January – April 2024)

– Keep in touch with their mentorship partner, and meet with them virtually a minimum of once per month, or more if mutually agreed upon

– Respect confidentiality

– To complete an exit survey (online) at the close of the session.

Please note that personal information collected through our mentorship program will only be used to facilitate and connect our matches. Aggregated data will be used for assessment and educational purposes.
