DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Federation of Library Associations — Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques will convene its 2nd National Forum in conjunction with the Manitoba Library Association (MLA). \nThe CFLA-FCAB National Forum 2020 will be held at the Delta Winnipeg Hotel\, Winnipeg\, Manitoba on Wednesday\, April 8\, 2020\, following the Manitoba Libraries Conference (April 6-7). \nA number of recent events held in Canadian library spaces have occasioned controversy within the Canadian library community\, causing many to question how best to apply foundational library values. Upholding the value of intellectual freedom may seem at times to undermine the great work libraries are doing to create welcoming spaces for all community members. It’s time to explore these issues together. Please join us! \nObjectives  \nThe 2020 Program Committee has identified the major objectives of the Forum to set expectations for the event and guide promotion. The objectives are as follows: \n\nTo foster a conversation with the Canadian Library community about intellectual freedom.\nTo understand how intellectual freedom may on occasion compete with other core values.\nTo explore best practices on how to manage these situations as they arise.\nTo use the experience\, knowledge and skills of library workers to inform CFLA-FCAB’s work in this area.

DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 2020 BC Library Conference\nLibraries\, Democracy\, and Action\nLibraries are uniquely able to support and maintain an inclusive and diverse society.  We provide staff\, space\, programming\, and services to help individuals\, families\, groups\, and communities maximize their potential for development and enhance their well-being.  As the author Eric Klinenberg put it in his book “Palaces for the People\,” libraries provide the “setting and context for social participation” and are a cornerstone of civic life. \nThe conference theme “Libraries\, Democracy\, and Action” is meant to inspire discussions about how libraries continue to build robust social infrastructure and how libraries play a critical role in linking communities to essential thinking and action focused on areas such as reconciliation\, inclusion\, diversity\, intellectual freedom\, creative and critical thinking\, and social responsibility. \nLibraries build social infrastructure and capacity every day.  The 2020 BC Library Conference theme provides an opportunity to share the ways libraries currently do this work\, and to explore the ways we intend to broaden and deepen the contributions libraries make to society. \nWe are privileged to hold the 2020 BC Library Conference in the City of Richmond which is located on the unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples\, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəyəm (Musqueam)\, Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, Stó:lō and Səlílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
