CAPAL supports the appointment of a professional librarian and/or archivist, to the position of Deputy Head and Librarian and Archivist of Canada. In addition CAPAL endorses the list of qualities as outlined in the Joint Statement on Qualities of a Successful Librarian and Archivist of Canada developed by a broad coalition of Canadian stakeholder organizations posted on the Canadian Library Association website: http://www.cla.ca/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home&TEMPLATE=/CM/ContentDisplay.cfm&CONTENTID=14209. Only a qualified professional who understands the legislative, cultural and social responsibilities of assuming this position on behalf of Canadians should be appointed. Many of us have been working behind the scenes to engage our faculty associations and other professional organizations to lobby the government on this specific concern.
