As information professionals, academic librarians facilitate discovery of and access to a wide variety of information. Canadians have a right to public and government information as covered under the Access to Information Act (ATIA), which originally came into force in 1985.
The Centre for Law and Democracy joined a global coalition of civil society organizations and wrote a letter that called upon the government to withdraw recent legislation that would reform the ATIA (Bill C-58). While a reform of the act is needed, the current proposed reform is inadequate.
CAPAL has signed the letter penned by The Centre for Law and Democracy and fully supports their call on the government to revisit the reformation of the ATIA.
The full letter and its signatories can be viewed online here.
