Greyson & Loubani: Support Humanitarian Efforts of Canadians and Petition for their Immediate Release

It is ironic, three days before World Humanitarian Day (August 19, 2013), which had been established by the UN to recognize those who face danger and adversity in order to help others, York University Professor John Greyson (filmmaker and environmental studies) and Dr. Tarek Loubani, a member of the Canadian Doctors for Refugee Care were arrested in Cairo. They were on route to the Gaza Strip, where they are working on an academic and medical collaboration between the University of Western Ontario (UWO) and the main hospital in the Gaza Strip, the al-Shifa hospital. As academic librarians we support the humanitarian efforts of our colleagues, whether working in medicine, the sciences or the arts, to bring global awareness and assistance to those in need.  CAPAL urges its members to sign the petition and actively pressure Canadian and Egyptian politicians to ensure the safe and immediate release of York University Professor John Greyson and physician, Dr. Tarek Loubani, from the Cairo prison.  Please spread the word among your colleagues and help mobilize a national effort to ensure their safe return.
